The Alto Glockenspiel is a percussion instrument, composed of a set of tuned metal bars resting over a frame like a trough. Contrary to our “Small Metal Set 1″ which contains the Glockenspiel, this time we used the alto version of this legendary red model of Hohner™ with an one octave lower range, which sounds more soft and mellow.
As a bonus you get two patches of a giant tuning fork with a size of 11″, made of solid material, which we found in a smithy.
We recorded the metal bars of the Alto Glockenspiel beaten with thin sticks and soft mallets, in 2 or 3 dynamic layers and three Round Robin variations, mapped in a range from C2 (C1) to F5. We added some scripts and fx to provide a lot of opportunities.
The huge tuning fork was beaten with a 5kg hammer. Additionally we recorded along the surface with special microphone movement to get different characters of the long lasting sustain.

The word “monochord” means literally “one string”. It was originally constructed by Pythagoras for basic harmonical experiments of tones 2500 years ago. In those days it was a simple wooden plate with only one string. Today the Monochord is an instrument with many strings of the same length stretched over a wooden soundbox, all tuned to the same tone. If you slowly pass your hands alternately over the strings without a break, you get a long-lasting sound that is rich in overtones.
Our German Monochord has 21 strings, one string tuned one octave lower. All strings are tuned to B.
Firstly we recorded separately each of the 21 strings of the Monochord plucked both with hands and plec in 2 or 3 dynamic variations. All the the strings were mapped in a range from C2 to C5 that you can pass your hands alternately over the keys related to the strings of the Monochord. Using this playing technique you get the typical long-lasting sound of the Monochord which you can transpose by using the key switch. Beyond that we recorded single strings in several Round Robin variations and dynamic layers that you can play the Monochord chromatically. Finally we created some intersting FX patches assembled from weird and experimental noises made with Monochord. We also added some scriptings to provide more opportunities.

The double bass harmonica is not exactly a common instrument. It was more popular several decades ago, when harmonica ensembles were more common. The bass harmonica is a double-deck instrument with two hinged bodies, the lower having all the natural notes, and the upper having all the sharps/flats – so it is fully chromatic covering a range of two octaves, starting with EE (like the lowest note on a bass guitar). Each of the holes of the harmonica has two reeds tuned an octave apart – thus this harmonica has 58 reeds total. The double bass harmonica is an “all blow” instrument.
It was a tough cookie to catch the real timbre and authenticity of this giant harmonica. Thus we tested several recording settings in which we recorded at least every second note in a long sustained and a short variation. We ran with velocity layer and Round Robin variation and came out with three seperate sample sets recorded with different microphone set-ups. Beside this we recorded a typical flutter fx and added some scriptings to provide more opportunities.

This is the second part of our successful experimental section: The “Experimental Box V2“. This time we focuses on objects and elements we found in a smithy of an artist blacksmith. We created a nice mishmash of highly playable rhythms, textures and instruments which are perfect for writing music in an experimental and minimalist way or giving your music a special character.
We just spent some hours in a smithy and recorded everything we could our hands on (next time we´ll definitely spend some more time): Nails, anvils, grindstones, ferreous tools, metal shapes, tubes, resonating plates, rattling sheets and any kind of machines. We´ve beaten, scrubbed and rattled the material and objects with hands, metal or rubber hammer, sticks and iron bars and came out with a wonderful assortment of textures, morphing pads, weird percussion and undefined instruments.

The Spieluhr (as known as musicbox) is a small instrument which produces sounds by the use of a set of pins placed on a rotating cylinder plucking the tuned teeth of a steel comb*. Our musicboxes are tiny with a size of 2,4 x 2 x 1″. The Glockenspiel is a percussion instrument, composed of a set of tuned metal bars resting over a frame like a trough. We used the legendary red children model of Hohner™ with a small range from C4 to F5.
Thanks to their high pitch, both instruments produce a very assertive and bright sound.
For sampling the Spieluhr we used three different models each with a different melody: the 5th movement of the 9th of Beethoven, the wonderful Romeo & Julia theme and “The Entertainer”. We set all these musicboxes on the body of an accoustic guitar as well as on the body of a baritone ukulele and recorded them in a close distance near the soundhole. Beyond this we recorded the musicboxes very normally on a surface of a wooden desktop.
The Glockenspiel was recorded in several dynamic layers and 3 times Round Robin variations in a close mic position. We also recorded the Glockenspiel in a distance of 5m.
Beyond this we created and processed some FX instrument patches and added some very useful scripting possibilities such as damping, sustain, amount, delay and arp to the patches.

The Celtic Nylon Harp is a small-sized harp with a height of nearly 39 inch (98 cm) and is usually designed for traditional music. The wooden instrument ranges in three octaves between C2 and C5 and has got 22 strings which are made of nylon and are plucked with the fingers. The harp has a lever close to the top of each string; when it is engaged, it shortens the string so its pitch is raised a semitone (sharped note if the string was a natural). The warm sound of the nylon strings is inspiring and adorable.
Every second note of the 22 strings of the Celtic Nylon Harp was recorded in several velocity layers and 4 Round Robin variations. We recorded the harp in two different mic positions (firstly very close and secondly at the sound hole at the rear of the harp), giving us different sound variations. We expanded the range from C1-G5 by tuning the strings beyond the intended key. With the ModWheel you can control the length and decay of the strings giving you feeling of damping. Beyond that you have got the possiblity of using the harp in a glissando or an arpeggiator mode.

“Experimental Music” is the genus for a couple of music styles, which incorporate unorthodox and unique elements. The Experimental Box we offer focuses on aspects of glitch, minmal and noise music and gives you a full toolbox of ingredients for cacophony, dissonance, atonality, noise, glitch, machines, hum, and repetition. It is a wonderful assortment of highgly playable rhythms, ambients and instruments which are perfect for writing music in an experimental and minimalist way. Beyond this, the box is suitable for combination with atmospheric, ambient and cinematic music…or just to build a wild cacophony.
The rhythms, ambients and instruments of the Experimental Box were assembled from unique sounds such as stations-announcements, trains, paper crumpling, acoustic and electronic noise, station hum, underground-railway noise, pneumatic doors, crown cap shaking, glitches, noise, hiss, hum and other weirdness. Brakes & Noises: Screaming brakes of an underground railway and noise ambience sent through a tape delay.

Frog Angels: Kind of whistling/ kazoo sound mixed with electronic filtered noise. Modwheel changes between the two ambiences.

Lonesomescape: Different recordings of synthetic generated noise and sine oscillators. Low and deep!
Noisescape: Different recordings of a busy lot and a sample of a station hum manipulated by filter and gates.
Railway Slices: A couple of samples and recordings of trains and underground railways of cologne as well as station announcements in German and English.
Reverse Garden: A combination of autoharp and psaltery fragments mixed up with a “bad” synthetic sound.
Western Dirt: A dirty, dry muted E-guitar with 3 Round Robin variations, additional noise, scratch and attack recordings. It´s easy to edit the delay (amount, speed and feedback) and reverb (amount).

The Bowed Psaltery is a stringed musical instrument of the zither family. It´s wooden soundbox has unstopped strings over it, which are playing with a bow. The Bowed Psaltery is triangular in shape, with each string extending a little farther than the one before, so that each can be individually bowed – allowing one note to sound at a time*.
We recorded every second string of the Bowed Psaltery using several different playing techniques: sustained notes as separate up and down bow strokes, short (approx. 3 sec.) as well as staccato bowed notes with 4 Round Robin variations, and tremolo notes. Beyond that, we recorded “slow – tremolo” loops, noises, and scratching effects produced with the bow. All these loops are tempo-synced. You might like to use these loops as ostinato backgrounds for your music. Several of the instrument patches are programmed to provide access to multiple articulations or dynamic layers using the modwheel, and other settings using the Kontakt interface.

This is a “Best of Percussion Vol.1”. Beside the essentials of the solo-instruments bongos (1 Set), chimes (only glissando), shaker (2x), spring drum (thunder) and tambourine, this set contains a nice collection of toms, cymbals and some wooden instruments. We recorded the Hi-Tom played with sticks and hands and the Low-Tom played with sticks and brushes in 5 velocity layers and 2 Round Robin variations. We recorded the ride cymbal played with sticks, brushes and timpani mallets as single notes and as a crescendo roll. Beyond that we added some more guiros, woodblocks and a triangle.
