Ambient Machine

The box is amplified by one large piezoelectric sensor placed inside. It is equipped with some old springs, bass guitar strings, a comb, a small musicbox and a few other things. The audio is then processed by pedals effects ( reverb, granular delay and a looper) and recorded in Ableton Live. The guy who delighted us is called DaFake

Kinetic installation

Deep.Web is a kinetic audiovisual installation and performance created by Christopher Bauder and Robert Henke. It is a monumental immersive audiovisual installation and live performance. The generative, luminous architectural structure weaves 175 motorized spheres and 12 high power laser systems into a 25 meter wide and 10 meter high super-structure, bringing to life a luminous analogy to the nodes and connections of digital networks. 2016.

Performing a 3D Printer

RITUAL

RITUAL for a 3D Printer is an electroacoustic musical piece composed for a machine. This work is another turn on investigating some essential aspects of musical expression and examining dramaturgic potential of mechanical objects. Monotonous motion, repetitive evolvement, irregularly pulsing passages and then straightened rhythmical patterns, all are silhouettes and shadows of different rituals. Check out Niko for more great instruments.

Composing by Improvising

Dürbeck & Dohmen

A live recording and composing session for the upcoming motion picture 'God is great'. The composer duo Dürbeck & Dohmen left their studio for a day and set up their gear in an old factory hall. The music was composed by improvising to the projected images with modular synths, guitar pedals and sampled instruments from CINEMATIQUE INSTRUMENTS.

Koka’s Soundtrack Box No. 1.

Soundtrack Box No. 1 was made to produce music for a feature film. It provided me with just as many limitations and possibilities, as I needed in order to be fully comfortable in the creative process. This video briefly demonstrates some of its capabilities. The soundtrack itself has of course more musical value

John Cage "Water Walk" (1959)

For Water Walk, Cage rounded up a variety of “instruments” all to do with that liquid — a bathtub, a pitcher, ice cubes in a mixer — and the unconventional symphony they produce culminates in the Rube Goldbergian mixing of a drink. Naturally, Cage being Cage, the piece incorporates audience reaction noises; when host Gary Moore warns him that certain members of the studio audience will laugh, Cage responds, “I consider laughter better than tears.”

Performer : Samuel BORE (la Fonderie, 6 mai 2012). John Cage originally performed this piece in TV at 1960, see here.

Mechanical Techno

Several looping records spin on the same axle, ensuring they stay approximately in time with each other. Graham Dunning layers up locked groove records, audio triggers to analogue sytnhs, mechanically played percussion such as a cowbell or a cymbal, and mechanically triggered drum machines. He takes all these inputs and perform a live dub, mixing down to two channels live in one take. More here.

tv404 video glitch synth

tv404 is a glitch video synth specially designed to be assembled at workshops. The project is based on the conceptual principles of the "aesthetics of error" and is an example of an interactive glitch object as video images are produced on the basis of optical distortions, errors in data transmission and noise at all layers, which results in interesting and never-repetitive results. more here

Blowjob

Three amplified electric guitars and three fans.
Soundscape generated naturally by the passage of air through the strings and by its set in motion light filaments, that touch, in a stochastic way, the instruments. What you can hear is a universe unique and uncontrollable and at the same time uniform and harmonious: stillness in motion... More at myatelier.net

Oil

The main idea of this project is to present exhibition visitors with the chance to destroy any object that might happen to be on their person, in order to transform it into a unique sound composition. The installation consists of five hydraulic presses, capable of crushing practically any object (a mobile telephone, pair of glasses, headphones or whatever). In the process of destruction, a special microphone records the sounds made as the object undergoes deformation, and in just a few minutes, a computer algorithm transforms them into a 20 minutes album. Yaybahar

Yaybahar is an electric-free, totally acoustic instrument. The vibrations from the strings are transmitted via the coiled springs to the frame drums. These vibrations are turned into sound by the membranes which echo back and forth on the coiled springs. This results in an unique listening experience with an hypnotic surround sound. What you hear in this performance is captured in realtime without any additional effects and with no post audio processing.More here.

SONIC WATER

Sonic Water is a cymatics installation. Cymatics is the process of visualizing sound and vibrations through matter, such as for example sand or water. More here

CONTACT

Augmented Acoustics - CONTACT is a tangible audio interface to manipulate and visualize sounds generated from interaction with a simple wooden surface. Any physical contact with the table generates acoustic vibrations which are manipulated and visualized LIVE as they occur using several communicating pieces of software. All code will be opensource and available on github.

Disarm: Turning Weapons Into Instruments

As part of his ongoing effort to transform weapons into musical instruments, artist Pedro Reyes constructed a fully mechanized orchestra. Titled Disarm, the collection of eight new instruments were built through a collaboration with several musicians and Cocolab, a media studio in Mexico City.

Speaker Horns

Christopher Locke creates hand-made amplifiers called “Analog Tele-Phonographers” purposed to volume up your iPhone or iPad and at the same time to bring out the old times vibe. He designs custom-built loudspeakers from recycled trumpets, trombones, french horns and other brass instruments. What’s good about these unusual amplifiers is that they require no external power source. See more at heartlessmachine.com

Understanding Music

Music is a good thing. But what we did not know until we started with the research for this piece: Music is also a pretty damn complex thing. This experimental animation is about the attempt to understand all the parts and bits of it. Have a look. You might agree with our conclusion!

Prepared Turntables

A turntable that focuses on actively composing and playing music. This record player has 5 tone arms, each of which can have its volume controlled by its own fader. This is an analogue answer for the digitalized DJ. By Yuri Suzuki

Physical Beat Box

The Beatbox is a physical programmable drum machine. Consisting of 5 tappers and a central hub you can teach each tapper by tapping on its top. Once taught they will faithfully re-tap your rhythms until you tell them to stop, or teach them again.

Music From A Tree

To celebrate Earth Day 2012 Burt's Bees asked me to create a video performance in the style of my Music from a Tree.
They thought to include as "instruments" also some of the ingredients used in their products, like honey, almonds, rice, and coconuts; also bees had a musical role in this piece.

Playing The Building

Playing the building is a sound installation in which the infrastructure, the physical plant of the building, is converted into a giant musical instrument. Devices are attached to the building structure — to the metal beams and pillars, the heating pipes, the water pipes — and are used to make these things produce sound. The activations are of three types: wind, vibration, striking. The devices do not produce sound themselves, but they cause the building elements to vibrate, resonate and oscillate so that the building itself becomes a very large musical instrument. By David Byrne - ex singer of Talking Heads.
