OUR STORY
The story of Cinematique Instruments goes back to the 1990s. Its founders, René Dohmen and Joachim Dürbeck, were already working with samplers such as the Ensoniq EPS16+ and AKAI S-1000.
From the beginning, they recorded their own loops and samples to give their music something personal – their own sound world. At a time when commercial sound libraries were still rare, this meant recording, experimenting and creating sounds from scratch with microphones, instruments and whatever else they could find.
This way of thinking about sound became the foundation of Cinematique Instruments.
Alongside this, René and Joachim worked for more than 25 years as the film-composing duo Dürbeck & Dohmen, creating music for over 100 films and developing a distinctive signature sound. In 2017, their work was honoured with the German Music Authors’ Prize.

In 2009, Cinematique Instruments was founded to share the instruments and sounds René and Joachim had originally created for their own music.
The idea was simple: look at things differently, improve what matters and leave out what doesn't. Over the years, this resulted in a collection of unusual, rare and distinctive instruments – built not around technology for its own sake, but around sound and musical character. It's probably the fact that we're both users and manufacturers that shows us what you really need to make music. Along the way, composers and sound designers Till Metzner and Jonas Strupp joined the team and became part of the Cinematique Instruments story.
TODAY
Since 2026, Cinematique Instruments has been continued by Joachim Dürbeck as part of TONEVELD.
The catalogue, its history and its original approach to sound remain – while a new chapter begins.
